Research Areas

  1. GENE DISCOVERY IN pediatric and adult liver diseases

We apply genomic approaches to investigate patients with liver disease of unknown cause. Identification of underlying genetic defects provides new insights into the role of specific genes in the maintenance of normal liver function as well as disease pathogenesis. These studies yields new diagnostic tools and potential novel therapeutic targets for patients with rare and common forms of liver disease.

 

2. UNCOVER THE BIOLOGY LINKING NEWLY DISCOVERED LIVER-RELATED GENES TO DISEASE

We use both mouse models and iPSC-based models to decipher how a mutant gene causes cellular and molecular liver disease pathogenesis. We have exciting projects in the lab uncovering the molecular pathogenesis of portal hypertension and cholestasis, with direct impact in developing novel therapeutics.

 

3. GENOMIC medicine in HEPATOLOGY: THE FUTURE IS NOW

We actively integrate clinical, translational and basic research approaches to advancing our current knowledge of liver function in health and disease, directly improving patient care. We envision a future where nearly everyone in our health care system will have a genetic test done, so we will know better why each individual develop disease and how best to treat each patient. Our group is leading the way to implementing Genomic Medicine for Liver Disease, and establishing an inaugural Hepatology Genome Rounds series.
